My Role Strategic Product Designer
Scope Payments, Marketplace, Platform
Overview

Building the trust layer that keeps the world's work marketplace moving.

As a strategic product designer for Upwork's Payments business unit, I led initiatives across critical flows: transactions, unified checkout, accounting infrastructure, and marketplace quality, powering the company's core monetization engine.

My role extended beyond UI/UX into shaping product and platform strategy through deep cross-functional collaboration. From remapping accounting systems and launching a cash advance partnership program to driving platform cohesion and scaling high-quality talent, I focused on delivering both meaningful user experiences and measurable business results.

In addition to my core product work, I played a role across the design org, supporting peers through design critiques, cross-functional rituals, and platform-wide initiatives. My focus was always on aligning great design with great outcomes.

Trust in a marketplace flows in every direction — between clients, freelancers, and the platform itself. We lifted the experience across all three, and the incremental revenue impact followed.

01 Case Study
Turning transaction frustration into a leap in satisfaction
Led the first major redesign in 7+ years, navigating a challenging PM transition, complex technical constraints, and extensive accounting-entry remapping with limited cross-functional support. Delivered measurable gains for both clients and freelancers, and subsequently supported multiple follow-on launches including Payments for Clients and Agency rollout.

Scaling design culture and ambition across a 45-person UX org
Design as a Strategic Partner was a multi-topic learning and development initiative to strengthen designers' ability to influence strategy, collaborate early, and drive clarity across product work. The core problem: designers were consistently pulled in after direction was already set, limiting their impact on the what and why. I helped build the programs, curriculum, and shared culture to develop the hard skills (analytics, business fluency, research) and soft skills (feedback norms, mentorship, peer growth) designers needed to show up as genuine strategic contributors.
